4 things that you will learn as a first-time mother

4 things that you will learn as a first-time mother

I never expected that being a mother would be such a joyful and challenging experience at the same time. It is a learning process that you need to experience to understand. Here are four things that I learned from my experience of becoming a mother

  1. Don’t listen to all advice

Once I announced my pregnancy to family and friends, I started getting a lot of advice which I believe is mostly well-meaning.

But, as soon as my daughter was born, I tried to implement that advice which often didn’t work for me and I ended up confused and overwhelmed with the whole experience of being a first-time mother.

After failing with the advice from others (even from my own mother), I decided to follow my intuition to overcome motherhood challenges and become very selective with advice from others. I realised that I was under a lot of pressure to become the perfect mother and did not realise that as a mother we have the natural instinct that we should follow instead of listening to others.

  1. Focus on your own progress

Stop comparing yourself with other mothers, especially on social media or even at a playground. We may look at them and think about how they nailed parenting and doing really well with all other motherhood challenges.

They may look happy and perfect but in fact, you never know are their challenges and struggles with motherhood

Instead of comparing ourselves, we should focus on our own progress, be confident and be very selective about listening to others’ advice.

  1. Making progress is not always smooth

There are so many different phases that I went through, from feeding issues, sleepless nights, constant nappy change, teething, eczema, and the list goes on and on.

I was lucky that my daughter started sleeping through the night when she was only 8 weeks old but then she went through a teething phase and then her eczema skin condition occurred, resulting in her waking up almost every hour again just like a newborn.

Luckily I found bamboo pyjamas that helped her skin condition and also helped her to sleep better at night (click HERE for the softest bamboo pyjamas).

Motherhood is a journey and you will go through so many ups and downs along the way and we have so much to learn from each phase. But believe me, motherhood gets better every time you pass each phase.

  1. Take care of yourself

I remember feeling so depressed, sleep-deprived, tired, and could not even have the time to brush my hair or brush my teeth every morning. It was intense and challenging for me especially when I had to stay at home for a while to look after my daughter and was unable to work.

Motherhood is a significant transition in a woman’s life and it is normal to feel overwhelmed. This process is called matrescense. Matrescence is a transition with physical, emotional, hormonal, and social to becoming a mother.

Start to prioritize your physical and mental well-being because you can only tackle these motherhood challenges when you are fit inside and outside. Or as they say, fit your own oxygen mask first!
