Of course, cotton fabric is better than polyester. But is there something better than cotton?
For years and years, neonatal nurses have been recommending 100% cotton as the preferred material for baby’s sensitive skin. Our daughter Isla came to the world in 2018, and like any other new parents, we received advice from our nurse to use cotton products. Unfortunately, Isla still developed Eczema even with Cotton.
As other mums would do, I asked the best resource I knew. The other mums in my mothers’ group! Some of them were saying they had heard that bamboo fabric is good for their baby’s sensitive skin. So, I jumped online to find these products, but they tended to be quite expensive. I bought them anyway because I wanted to try to see if that could provide some relief for Isla. The results were pretty amazing. After a few days, I noticed the rashes were disappearing, and Isla was sleeping better. I was intrigued and started to do a bit of reading and learning about bamboo as a fabric and found out the following key benefits:
Sensitive skin
Bamboo is naturally hypo-allergenic, is gentle on the skin, and does not irritate. So, it is perfect for babies’ sensitive skin and even for adults with acne, dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema. It appears that whilst cotton has been recommended for years, this was due to people purchasing polyester fabric. Whilst there is no doubt cotton is better than polyester for sensitive skin, it does appear that bamboo is a good alternative to cotton … particularly when you look at some of these other areas below as well.
Breathable and Thermo-regulating
Bamboo fabric is light and soft which allows the skin to breathe. Even at the peak of summer, baby’s skin can breathe and be comfortable. It also contains millions of microscopic gaps, which allows it to be thermoregulating. This makes baby feel cooler in the summer and warmer in winter, minimizing itchy skin and irritability due to overheating.
Antibacterial
Bamboo fabric is antibacterial. Unlike cotton, which can retain moisture and create the perfect environment for bacteria growth, bamboo fabric wicks moisture away from baby’s skin to help maintain hygiene.
Sustainable
Bamboo as a plant is actually a fast-growing grass, so replaces quickly after being harvested. Unlike cotton which needs to be replanted completely after harvesting. Most bamboo crops do not need pesticides or fertilizers, and only need 1/3 the amount of water that cotton requires. Furthermore, bamboo products are stronger than cotton, hence they do not need to be replaced as regularly, and require much less dye to create the patterns, meaning fewer chemicals are required in production
The good news is now you can get all these benefits, without paying the same expensive prices I paid at the start. I was so impressed at the benefits, I created a line of affordable and sustainable bamboo sleepwear products for mums and babies! I want to share with other parents the benefits of reducing skin irritation for babies, allowing the whole family to sleep better.
Peace at night. Peace of mind.
